Attempt at consensus fails as rioting continues
PM’s talks with opposition leaders yields no common ground

Rioting continued in Athens and numerous other Greek cities for a third full day yesterday as the prime minister's attempts to achieve some political consensus on dealing with the turmoil failed to find any significant support from opposition parties.

Position vacant: A government
The times are critical and call for courage, unity and decisive moves on the part of the political leadership. Unfortunately, none of these three qualities are in evidence. There is not even any unity within the ranks of the government. Cabinet members have gone to ground as they don't want to be identified with the fiasco that is the government's mishandling of the crisis.

Greece in self-destruct mode
I feel a deep sense of despair as I watch my country roll down an endless hill. A good friend put into context well: «You remember the euphoria we felt when we won the European soccer championship or in the summer of the Olympic Games? Well, today I feel the absolute opposite.» The fatal shooting of the teenager in Exarchia and the destruction that followed struck a vein of rage and has created a wave of senselessness that has choked all reason.

A false dilemma
The endless controversy over the efforts to legalize private colleges in Greece goes right to the heart of the failure of our politicians and society to adapt to the times. Taboos, prejudices, political grandstanding and fear of the political cost have all been employed to stymie efforts to deal with reality, keeping the colleges and their graduates in limbo for no reason other than an inability to deal with problems.
