Tough road
The announcement yesterday of six major, self-financed road network projects due to be constructed over the next five years marks a big step for the government. Up until now, the conservatives have seemed rather dormant during much of their year in power, causing serious problems for the construction sector's labor force and resulting in delays for vital infrastructure; this was a conspicuous factor in the tragic accidents at the Tempi and Maliakos regions last year.
COMMENTARY
A suspended step
Pressured by Washington, most European governments have, over the last few years, tried to embellish Turkey's image, portraying it as a nation that is steadily converging with European norms and standards. But Ankara has not tired of showing its true face, most recently with the brutal breakup on Sunday of a demonstration to mark International Women's Day. Such incidents are not uncommon in Turkey, however a visit by senior European Union officials at the same time ensured that this one reached international audiences.
