Alogoskoufis presents new taxation bill Businesses and individuals to benefit

In a bid to revitalize the Greek economy and simplify the tax system, Finance and Economy Minister Giorgos Alogoskoufis yesterday announced a raft of fiscal changes, including annual cuts worth 150 million euros, aimed at giving individuals and businesses a foot up.

Many aspects of the new taxation bill to be tabled this week are good grounds for comment. Direct tax breaks, for example, for lower-income groups or a greater recognition of expenses that would somewhat relieve the tax burden on middle-income groups are feasible measures...
COMMENTARY
Important December date
The next European Union summit is not far off. On December 17, the EU partners will decide, some joyfully, others regretfully, the date for the start of accession talks between Ankara and Brussels. In view of this fact, it is expected that Greece will vote in favor, since its political leaders have in the past few years taken the view that a «European» Turkey would be a tamer neighbor, an interlocutor for Greece.
OPINION
Hold back the rain
We do not know what conclusions will emerge from a prosecutor's investigation that seeks to attribute blame for the unprecedented damage caused by Monday night's rainwater floods in Piraeus - the ones that caused the car pileups. And we can feel little optimism for a prosecutor's chances of pinning down the culpable parties from a mass of «competent» officials.
