PM tough on corruption Karamanlis accepts no compromise in fight against vested interests

The government is determined to shut out corruption and will not back down in its legislative effort to achieve this goal, the prime minister said at a meeting of New Democracy's MPs yesterday, just days before a bill restricting media entrepreneurs' access to public contracts is to be tabled.

Teachers’ protest rally...
EDITORIAL
Radical reform
The demonstration by teachers from primary schools, universities and state technical colleges (TEIs) yesterday was staged in order to protest inadequate funding in the education sector. The lack of funding, however, is not the only problem. Schools and universities have failed to live up to their mission.
COMMENTARY
The third party
It looked so simple. In the spirit of purging the country, the New Democracy government launched a parliamentary inquiry into alleged irregularities in arms procurements by the PASOK government. This appeared to be part of the political ritual of our mature democracy, in which a new government sets the agenda and members of the former one try to limit the damage as best they can. What no one anticipated was that the stage would not feature just these two players. The third protagonist - none other than the representatives of international arms merchants - made a dynamic entry this past week, greatly complicating matters.
