There is no time to waste
The conservative prime minister appears to have finally grasped the public's growing disappointment with the performance of the New Democracy government and has responded by making some key changes. There is not a single day to waste. The economy as well as the social security and the education systems are all in a sorry state. The administration of Costas Karamanlis must avoid any further foot-dragging and promote the requisite changes as soon as possible.

Cultivating terror
The most frightening thing about the shooting of a young police officer by suspected members of an extreme-leftist terrorist group is how predictable the whole thing was. As 21-year-old Diamantis Mantzounis lies in critical condition in the Red Cross Hospital, wounded by bullets in Monday's attack, Greeks are once again witness to the equivocations that have kept public debate tangled up in myths and nonsense for the past 30 years or so.
