Socialists hold rally in Athens as Karamanlis speaks in Thessaloniki

PASOK leader George Papandreou urged voters yesterday not to believe claims that the result of the upcoming election is a foregone conclusion, as he made his penultimate public address in Athens at the same time as Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis was attempting to ensure that his party does not lose any votes in Thessaloniki.

EDITORIAL
Building a proactive state
Although most eyes are fixed on the coming elections, we should by no means disregard certain worrying trends in the international economy that could affect the future of the country more than the margin separating the two main contenders. The fact that oil prices have soared to over 80 dollars a barrel is having a direct impact on the domestic economy - particularly given that the budget was drafted when oil prices were at just 65 dollars a barrel.
COMMENTARY
Opportunities and challenges
The elections will be partly decided by the clash of two conflicting forces: The first is a centrifugal force - it originates from the crisis of Greece's two-party system and pushes disaffected voters toward the minor parties which will attract a great deal of the protest vote. The other is centripetal: It is rooted in concerns over a weak government and is pushing voters toward the big parties.
