Let utilities be proper companies
A key issue still to be tackled by the Greek state concerns its attitude toward public utilities (DEKO). Should they be treated as corporations or as public benefit foundations? The lack of a coherent strategy to a large extent explains the bankruptcy of Olympic Airlines, Greece's state-owned carrier. The Public Power Corporation (PPC) is now in trouble for more or less the same reasons. It's time for the government to make up its mind on the issue.
COMMENTARY
Crisis: both threat and opportunity
Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has become very busy trying to heal his party's wounds and regain the advantage. His top cadres are trumpeting Beethoven's «Eroica» symphony, doing the rounds of prefectural committees in an attempt to convince New Democracy party members that the next paraliamentary elections are a long way off - definitely after the 2010 presidential election.

Dictatorship of the proletariat
Protest marches in Athens are an experiment in how meaningful mechanisms of political expression can - when abused over a long time - degenerate into meaningless ritual. When taken to an extreme, they reveal the absurdity of political or labor activism gone wild: Protest marches are held to demand an improvement in a situation, but when abused they can actually make it worse.
