Lacking purpose, TEIs fail education
We used to worry that Greek universities and technical colleges (TEI) produced degrees that were of no or of little value. Now, statistics from the Education Ministry have given us further reason for concern. Many of the TEIs, which have been scattered pointlessly around the provinces, don't even produce a piece of paper that Greek students can frame and put on their walls. Some departments are full of first-year students but have no graduates. The popular and historical music department of the TEI in Epirus, which has seen just two graduates from a student body of 264, is just the tip of the iceberg.
COMENTARY
The cost of a gray economy
The findings of a recent Eurobarometer poll, published in Thursday's Kathimerini, are disturbing. They are troubling not so much because they reveal the pessimism of most Greeks regarding the fate of their country and their restrained optimism about their personal future. It is the contrast between these stances that is so worrying. While 57 percent of Greeks declared that «the next 12 months will be worse as regards the country's economic situation» (as compared to an EU average of 35 percent), only 28 percent claim to be similarly negative about their personal financial situation.
