Skopje raises diplomatic stakes
FYROM premier calls for recognition of ‘Macedonian minority’ and rights for ‘refugees’ in letter to Karamanlis

Athens yesterday reacted angrily to a letter sent to Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis by his Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) counterpart Nikolas Gruevski calling for the recognition of a supposed «Macedonian minority» in Greece and the granting of rights to FYROM citizens who left Greece during the civil war.

The mask has finally fallen
The letter from the prime minister of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to the Greek prime minister simply confirmed what most of us already knew. There is no well-intentioned partner with whom we can talk in Skopje. Instead, there is a political leadership that prefers to engage in provocative behavior. What makes it more unfortunate is that it is not aware of its mistakes. It has not realized that naming Skopje's airport «Alexander the Great» pushed Greece into exercising its right to veto FYROM's bid to join NATO.

The mother of invention
The economic crisis that has broken out across the world looks like the beginning of a difficult time for many countries. Even Europe, with its relatively well-off population and sophisticated safety net for the poorest citizens, looks like it will suffer greatly in the storm. And Greece is no exception. Just six months ago, the government and bankers were proclaiming that Greece would be immune to the credit crunch caused by the subprime mortgage fiasco in the United States. But that crisis kept deepening, making money more expensive after a long period of low rates, at the same time that fuel and food prices, as well as other commodities, began to reach unprecedented highs.
