Riots regarded as ‘social uprising’
Six in 10 see unrest as ‘mass phenomenon,’ poll indicates, as politicians try to show responsibility

As an opinion poll yesterday showed that six out of 10 Greeks believe the past week of violent riots were a «popular uprising» and not the work of «minority activists,» politicians from across the spectrum expressed differing opinions about what action should now be taken.

EDITORIAL
There’s only one way to go forward
The worth of a political leader is determined by his reaction to a major crisis. Greece has been embroiled in a deep crisis for more than a week. Regrettably, the premier has forgotten much of what he promised back in 2004. Costas Karamanlis did not re-establish what was a bankrupt state; he did not fill his administration with qualified professionals nor did he introduce the requisite reforms to the economy, education and health sectors.
COMMENTARY
Face-to-face with ourselves
Last Saturday our children entered a new world. It is not their fault if the relationship between the citizen and the state is not ideal. Responsibility lies with those who for so many years have been in government or opposition and allowed our republic's problems to fester. Citizens and the media are to blame for accepting the degradation of our institutions and for tolerating a political system of which no one expects anything more than the dispensation of favors to further their own interests rather than society's as a whole.

Veil of illusions lifted
For years we feared that the dangerous game between anti-establishment youths and police would lead to someone being killed. But even so, when the dreadful event did occur, no one could have predicted how terrible it would be nor how it would shake Greece to its core. The murder was not committed in the heat of battle between anarchists and riot police, where it could somehow be explained as a predictable accident.
