Bus hijackers issue morning ultimatum Threaten to blow up six hostages

A bus hijacking on the eastern fringes of Athens was poised on a knife-edge last night as one of the two men who seized the vehicle threatened to blow it up this morning along with the six remaining hostages on board, unless demands for a 1-million-euro ransom and safe passage out of Greece were met.

Turk bid reveals European failures
The European Union summit starting in Brussels today will, to a considerable degree, decide the future form of the bloc, as it is expected to make the historic decision of giving Ankara a date for the opening of EU membership negotiations.
COMMENTARY
Clarifying Helsinki
Opposition leader George Papandreou's calls for «strict conditions» before the Greek government gives the go-ahead for the start of Turkey's EU membership talks are of no help to Athens's diplomatic efforts for a positive outcome. The government bears responsibility for its decisions and it will be judged on their outcome.

Synaspismos in leftward shift
No sooner was Alekos Alavanos elected chairman of Synaspismos Left Coalition than he began to actualize his longstanding ambition of shifting his party toward the left of the political spectrum. The signs are already there. On a television program earlier this week, Synaspismos's newly elected leader and a representative of the Communist Party were discussing the nomination of former PASOK minister Karolos Papoulias as president of the republic.
