City beset by enemy within
The center of Athens is facing an unprecedented crisis and many believe that it is teetering on the brink of collapse. On the one hand, spiraling crime is posing a major obstacle to traders and businesses located in the heart of the Greek capital. Meanwhile, on the other, gangs of hooded youths and other advocates of violence attempt to make whatever point they are trying to make by destroying private and public property at will and going unpunished.

The contagion of chaos
Perhaps the most alarming piece of news in recent months - which was already frightening enough - was a report in last Sunday's Kathimerini that the police have decided to reassemble their intelligence-gathering capabilities in a bid to cope with the resurgence of domestic terrorism. «It is impossible for us to devote the resources needed to protect every possible target,» said a high-ranking source, speaking on condition of anonymity. «Therefore, we have to concentrate our efforts on trying to collect information.»
