EDITORIAL
An end to impunity
There can be no doubt that certain media groups have during the past few weeks targeted government officials, particularly those who are responsible for the ongoing investigations into shady deals. The pressure on them is intense. Persons implicated in the illegal fuel trade and controversial media barons who have become accustomed to virtual impunity are waging a battle for their very survival. Conservative Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has said that his government will not yield to blackmail. For this reason he has put his weight behind those officials who have come under fierce attacks from those who fear monitoring of their activities.
COMMENTARY
Fighting a rearguard action
These are days of great change in the Balkans. The Kosovar Albanians are breaking away from Serbia. At the same time, the effort to find a name for the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia appears to be in its final phase: UN mediator Matthew Nimetz is due here today and he does not appear to be bringing anything that will make Athens happy. If we add the presidential elections in Cyprus, we can say that this week will, to a great extent, determine the future of Greece's relations with its neighbors but also with distant powers that affect the region, namely the United States and Russia.
