Avoiding the rocks
Reform campaigns in Greece have always hit the same rocks, namely corruption, which over the past 25 years has swept through public administration, local government agencies and even the private sector. Conservative Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis is now facing the same challenge. The good news is that he seems willing and determined to push through much-needed reforms.

Greece and the superpowers
The visit to Athens by President Vladimir Putin did not only have an economic dimension but also a political one. Putin's congratulatory message to Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Thursday and his telephone call with best wishes to the conservative leader for his birthday demonstrate this. Putin talked of a «bilateral strategic partnership» between the two countries, echoing US President George W. Bush's earlier statement that Greece's is Washington's «strategic partner» in the Balkan region.
