Reforms lined up for New Year Government plans to hit the ground running from January on university, port and OTE changes

Vocal opposition this year to the government's efforts to introduce a range of reforms has not deterred the ruling conservatives from pushing through the changes from the beginning of next year, New Democracy sources told Sunday's Kathimerini.

The budget debate in Parliament
A very important debate about the national budget started in Parliament yesterday. Our experience of similar debates has prepared us for the results this discussion is likely to produce. But of course we can hope that something different may happen this time. Pompous declarations and ostentatious demonstrations of rhetoric which lack any real substance are useless. And the traditional evacuation of Parliament after the speeches of the party leaders is hardly a sign of respect for the parliamentary procedure.
COMMENTARY
Our neighborhood is changing
In two weeks time, Greece's place in the broader region will change radically. In the biggest single development in the Balkans since the collapse of communism in 1989, Bulgaria and Romania will become members of the European Union on January 1, 2007. This opens a new era of opportunity but also difficult challenges for Greece.
