The Greek amateur athletics federation (SEGAS) yesterday cleared disgraced star sprinters Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou of charges that they dodged three drug tests in the lead-up to the August Olympics, laying the entire blame for the runners' no-shows on the controversial coach both used at the time.

Art sponsorship
A conference held yesterday on the question of arts sponsorships and the relationship between the arts and business offered useful proposals for streamlining Greece's policy on culture. Reform is more urgent now that fiscal austerity measures are expected to bring a reduction in state subsidies in the culture sector. The conservative administration has already announced its intent to move away from the parochial model of state-dependent culture, even if plans for a new model of financing remain vague.

Having remodeled PASOK in a bid to fend off opposition from within the party, Socialist leader George Papandreou is expected to intensify his attacks on the government, mostly over economic issues. Soaring inflation and unemployment, magnified by the populist media, have created deep economic worries for households. Prompted by rumors that more broadcasting permits are to be issued, existing media owners, who fear extra competition have indulged in a smear campaign...
