PASOK must keep populism at bay
PASOK's party conference which opened yesterday is in itself a major political event. Should the main opposition Socialist party succeed in articulating a comprehensive and modern proposal for tackling Greece's structural problems - and at the same time a proposal that will advance the common good - this will constitute a propitious development not only for PASOK itself but also for the country's political system.
COMMENTARY
Doomsayers eat their words
The European Commission decision to end the excessive debt procedure for the Greek economy has thrown the main Socialist opposition party into a whirlpool of confusion and meanness. The announcement by the EU's Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia that the Greek government had managed to trim its deficit to below the 3 percent threshold sparked a spate of vitriolic statements by PASOK officials.
OPINION
The principle of countability
The principle of countability has become omnipresent. We measure the square meters of the property we own (or would like to own), we count the number of hours we spend commuting and the hours we are awake and asleep. Meanwhile our work performance is constantly being measured and assessed. In all these areas, quantity counts more than quality. The number of «clients» a doctor sees has become more important than the number of sick people he or she cures.
