Athens air often a ‘toxic’ mix
Ministry report shows that pollution exceeded safe levels on 163 days last year; experts call for industry curbs

Air pollution in central Athens exceeded internationally recommended safety levels on nearly half the days of last year, according to a report by the Environment and Public Works Ministry which also noted a growing smog problem in regions around Attica such as Mesogeia and the Thriaseio Plain.

Candidates galore, no proposals
Greece's political parties expect to sway voters by announcing their candidates for the upcoming European parliamentary elections. The problem is that political figures are not enough to attract public interest. Voters expect to see specific proposals and policy recommendations. It is a shame that parties have not gone to the trouble of explaining to voters how they plan to deal with the numerous acute problems dogging the country.

A sinister turn in our immigration problems
ln the last few weeks, Athens took a serious fall down the slippery slope of xenophobia and intolerance. Not that it was unexpected: For over a year, anyone who cared about the capital city and its center - as well as anyone who cared about the fate of illegal immigrants - warned that abandoning migrants to their own devices would lead to trouble.
