Kenteris, Thanou pull out of Games Greece’s top sprinters say they are clean but tell IOC they are withdrawing from the Olympics

Sprinters Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou withdrew from the Olympics yesterday, handing over their accreditations at a meeting with the International Olympic Committee's Disciplinary Commission and ending a saga that had cast a pall over the Athens Games for days.

Adding to the troubles of Greece's two disgraced top sprinters, police yesterday completed a series of interviews with witnesses regarding last week's mysterious motorcycle crash which ensured that Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou were finally unable to take a drug test they had been avoiding for hours.
Record air traffic for Olympics
A record-breaking 2,462 civil aircraft flew through Greek air space last Thursday, on the eve of the Olympic opening ceremony, the Civil Aviation Authority said yesterday.
Ticket revenue target topped
With 11 days left to go before the end of the Games, organizers said yesterday they have exceeded their ticket revenue target of 183 million euros. According to Athens 2004 spokesman Michalis Zacharatos, Monday's sales of 83,084 tickets brought the grand total up to 3,085,936.

Cleaning up Greek athletics
The solution that was given yesterday to the drama of the Greek doping suspects held no surprises. Their ostensibly voluntary withdrawal from the Games was the only option available to them. The two sprinters had allegedly been involved in a motorbike accident, suffering injuries which, according to doctors, prevented them from attending a hearing of the IOC disciplinary committee on Monday.

Greek strengths revealed
For the most part, Greece's politicians and private television channels have tended to snub the work and the aesthetics of artists like Dimitris Papaioannou. Politicians have barely had any contact with cultural issues and instead showed a soft spot for Greece's tacky coastal nightclubs. Television channels, on their part, have always been keen to focus on anything but the works of genuine artists like Papaioannou. But the time came for the so-called «cradle of civilization» to undergo a test on culture and artistic beauty before a global audience numbering billions. The need derived from Athens's Olympic obligations. And one can easily imagine...
