Ferry fire, passenger ire Blaze on Knossos Palace put out but people could not disembark

More than 1,000 passengers aboard one of Greece's most modern high-speed ferries, the Knossos Palace, had to don life jackets and assemble on the ship's decks early yesterday when a truck carrying chemicals caught fire in the garage.

Papandreou: Crucial time for Cyprus

Ballot manipulation
The violent acts and vote-rigging that the Albanian government organized in order to tamper with election results in the southern Himare region to the expense of Greek minority candidate Vassilis Bolanos this time overstepped the mark. Members of the government-appointed electoral committee in the village of Drymades did not hesitate to sign an official document that stated that the votes cast in favor of the winning ruling party candidate were five times the turnout - and all this before the eyes of international observers.

Rebels without a cause
The shock waves that have jolted the ruling party after a number of Socialist deputies announced that they will part ways with PASOK are to be observed in other countries as well. The French Socialists are having an identity crisis following their landslide defeat in the last elections. In Italy, the center-left party has laid all its hopes on Romano Prodi's return from Brussels. Britain's Tony Blair is faced with prolonged in-party dissent, while Gerhard Schroeder in Germany emerged weaker from his party conference in Bochum. «Our people don't feel they can go out and stand up for the party anymore,»...
