Trial-fixing scandal: Deja vu? Supreme Court prosecutor told government in 1993 about suspicious early releases of drug dealers

Greece's political leadership was made aware of the existence of corruption within the judiciary long before the current spate of scandals engulfed the institution, according to a letter, published in Sunday's Kathimerini, sent by a Supreme Court prosecutor to the then Justice Minister in 1993, drawing her attention to alleged trial-fixing.

The cost of past inertia in the judiciary
None of the illegal acts that judges have recently been accused of were known to the judicial authorities, Supreme Court President Georgios Kapos confirmed, and he was certainly telling the truth. But does ignorance of these acts absolve the judiciary of any responsibility for the presence of perjurers in their midst?

Remaking the Church of Greece
In a strong show of solidarity, senior clerics last week rallied round Greek Orthodox Church leader Archbishop Christodoulos. The unified stand of the clergy during an emergency meeting of the Holy Synod on Friday dealt a blow to enemies of the Church of Greece who had been hoping to force the archbishop from his seat and take away one of the traditional pillars of this country's society.
