Sticking our head in the sand again
Tension is rising again in the Balkans as Kosovo, the former Yugoslav province, has broken away from Serbia. Unfortunately, no one - not the United States, the European Union, or Belgrade - can be sure when the tensions will abide. Greece could have exploited its longstanding relations with all the governments in the region and provided useful input for a solution to the current problems.
COMMENTARY
The underlying issue in Cyprus
The three-way split of voters in the first round of presidential elections on Cyprus and the exclusion of Tassos Papadopoulos by the narrowest of margins is open to several different interpretations. In Greece, Papadopoulos's numerous enemies, most of whom fervently support the Annan Plan, rejoiced at the electoral defeat of the last representative of the Cypriot national liberation struggle.
