Flow of money into state coffers misses target Gov’t considers tax hikes to boost revenues

As it scrambles to reduce the deficit and put public finances in order, the government was dealt a blow yesterday by the revelation that the amount of money flowing into state coffers last year was substantially lower than previously projected, potentially prompting a rise in some taxes.

Enforcing tax discipline
The government's uphill struggle to shave the yawning budget deficit will, to a significant extent, depend on how well it does in fighting the now rampant tax evasion. The above conclusion is based on a report by Greece's General Accounting Office on the structure of the 2004 deficit that was made public yesterday.
