PM to take on tax dodgers Karamanlis will be responsible for new body overseeing financial checks

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis is to take personal charge of a new committee that will be set up to oversee tax departments, customs offices and other state services responsible for carrying out financial checks, in a bid to combat corruption and tax evasion, sources said yesterday.

Cracking down on oligopolies
The expected wave of price hikes in dairy products reveals a certain contradiction in the way the Greek market operates. For while inflation is officially running at around 2.5 percent, the increases actually being felt by households all around Greece are over 10 percent. The result is that poorer families, already suffering from price rises in 2007, will feel the brunt even further. While steps have indeed been taken in the last few years...
COMMENTARY
First steps
The government's program, set to be announced in the coming days, will give us a clearer picture of how, and how fast, the prime minister plans to go about advancing the outstanding reforms. After all, Costas Karamanlis was given a fresh mandate after he pledged to speed up reforms.
