Finding common ground
Greece's two main parties have to reach a consensus if they really want to solve some of the big problems that are plaguing this country. Greece is in crisis and this can only be overcome if ruling New Democracy and opposition PASOK join hands. The country's voters can only feel disappointment and frustration when they see that Greece's main political parties have been reduced to exchanging barbs and accusations on such significant issues as education reform, the global financial crisis and the state of the local economy as well as the resurgence of terrorism.
COMMENTARY
“Look at Greece…”
The riots in Greece last December are on their way to becoming one of the lasting symbols of the global recession, much in the way that «France 1968» captures the awakening of youth in that - other - eventful decade. Wherever tension rises due to economic hardship, governments tremble lest they have to deal with a rebellion like that of the Athenian youth.

United we stand
On Wednesday, Greece was one of six members of the European Union to be named subject to an «excessive deficit report» - the first step toward demanding stricter fiscal measures to bring an economy in line with its partners. Others named were powerhouses France, Spain and Ireland, along with minnows Latvia and Malta. From the way the Greek and international press had anticipated this in recent weeks, one would think that only Greece had an excessive deficit and was capable of undermining the euro on its own.
