Stocks tumble in Athens Brokers blame big losses during ‘Black Monday’ on international markets

Shares on the Athens bourse tumbled nearly 6 percent yesterday as panicky investors dumped stocks in view of sharp drops in emerging markets, prompting some experts to label the day «Black Monday» as employees of the National Bank of Greece threatened its agreement to acquire a Turkish bank.

Opportunities in the Balkans
Once again, there are changes being made to the map of our neighborhood. The Montenegrins have voted themselves out of their federation with Serbia. Meanwhile, the imminent independence of Kosovo will put paid to whatever was still left of the old Yugoslavia after the bloody wars of the 1990s. Irrespective of the outcome of events, it is fortunate that this time it is politics that has the last word, and not «other means,» as the political philosopher Carl von Clausewitz said.
From Everything to Hallelujah
Until a committee of television executives and politicians decides whether the extortionately expensive outfit of our «absolute star» - Anna Vissi - will go on display in a museum or will be cut up into pieces and stored in safe deposit boxes, we can only feel thankful that the «popular vote» deprived us of the top spot at the Eurovision song contest.
