PM claims the center Karamanlis promotes consensus politics in party congress speech

On the opening day of ruling New Democracy's sixth congress yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis sought to place his party firmly in the political center by emphasizing the virtues of consensus and solidarity. The opening of the party congress was timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the return of democracy to Greece. It was Karamanlis's uncle, Constantine Karamanlis, who returned to Greece in the early hours of July 24 to take over power vacated by a disgraced dictatorship.

The challenge of Homo Olympicus
We have been following the preparations for the Olympics and in particular the handover of new roads and modes of transport with a sense of relief. At a time like this, we should be looking at our new Olympic venues and appreciating the effort that has gone into creating them. Generally, we should be dressing ourselves up in Olympic colors over these last few weeks leading up to the Olympics - taking on the role of Homo Olympicus, however pretentiously romantic this may sound.
COMMENTARY
An upbeat look
Some aspects of public life inspire optimism while others - greater in number - are a cause for concern. Structural deficits, bad management, faltering productivity, and lack of professionalism all inject a pessimistic tone. But even in such an insecure and gloomy environment, an independent observer can still discern glimmerings of progress and rebirth in the productive forces. The Olympics preparations, which have been for the most part costly and problematic, still created the conditions for optimism.
