Watchdog with little bark, no bite
In a joint decision by ministers Prokopis Pavlopoulos, Giorgos Alogoskoufis and Dimitris Sioufas, the government has abolished the pay ceiling previously imposed on Competition Commission officials and given the green light for the recruitment of 50 new staff. There is no objection to this in principle. The commission is an independent body with the task of safeguarding free competition.
COMMENTARY
The other Greeks
In our efforts to explain Greece's absurdities, criticize the shortcomings of the public administration and expose the failings of what often appears to be a self-interested government, we often commit a serious error: We generalize. The death of two Greek firefighter pilots while combating a forest blaze in Evia provided yet another occasion for mourning in this difficult summer.
