Officers victims of hysteria The Greek police force has been reduced to a punch bag. The unjustified killing of a teenager by a police officer earlier this month not only sparked extensive rioting in the capital and other cities, but also triggered a wave of hysteria against each individual police officer as well as the police force at large.

2008: The end of illusions Even before the year started, it was evident that 2008 would be difficult, mainly because of the storm clouds gathering on the horizon as the housing market crashed in the United States. At the time, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and his minister for the economy, Giorgos Alogoskoufis, were adamant that the Greek economy was «armor-plated.» The fortifications, if they did exist, were useless: The crisis was here even before the storm crossed the Atlantic.
