The head of the Church of Greece came under increasing pressure to step down yesterday after the emergence of claims linking him closer than ever before to a fugitive drug dealer and a priest alleged to be at the center of a trial-fixing ring, but the government refused to join in the calls for his resignation.

Counting the cost
The data presented yesterday by Deputy National Economy and Finance Minister Petros Doukas on the 2004-related budget overruns exceeded the most pessimistic predictions concerning the extent of economic mismanagement during preparations for the Athens Olympics. As we have often noted on this page, the construction of venues and infrastructure projects for the Summer Olympic Games was seen by a small elite as a way of making easy money at the expense of the public purse.
COMMENTARY
Creative chaos
If past is prologue, the Church scandal wave will ebb with time; but the implicated figures will hardly escape unscathed. Still, there are exceptions. The allegations could snowball and make way for radical changes. In the Church scandal, it was widely sensed from early on that any disclosures would be far-reaching, if only because the heady mix of gay sex, money, judges, secret agents, intrigue and priests is irresistible to the media.
