Politics fails along with tertiary sector
For the past few years it has been clear that the practice of opening tertiary schools in small towns around the country has failed for a number of reasons. Now the introduction of a minimum pass mark of 10 out of 20 to qualify for entry to tertiary education has not only revealed the poverty of the entrance process itself but has also highlighted the political poverty of the main opposition party, which is now mourning - along with owners of apartments, bars and cafes in small towns - the potential loss of custom.
COMMENTARY
Style of governance
There are three things that establish a government in the eyes of the people - its work, its ethos and its style of governance. The current government, despite the delays and lackadaisical pace, has no doubt carried out a considerable body of work, particularly in the economic sector.
OPINION
University degrees without guarantees
There are university departments whose certificates do not guarantee any professional rights. For instance, someone can graduate from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics at the National Technical University of Athens but not be recognized as an engineer in the job market. The Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) will not register graduates of this school as members and the latter cannot work as engineers even though they have studied nanotechnology.
