EDITORIAL
A proposal against Greek interests
UN mediator Matthew Nimetz's proposal on the Macedonia name dispute does not bode well for Greek interests. He has adopted the composite name approach which, moreover, differs only slightly from FYROM's constitutional name. Unfortunately, critics of Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis's policy have so far been vindicated. Her decision to make concessions early in the process have resulted in the pressure being shifted onto Athens.
COMMENTARY
Need for patience and resolve
The stage is set. The USA is trying to avert a Greek veto by initiating a last-gasp round of frenetic bargaining. It is trying to transform Matthew Nimetz from a mediator into an unofficial arbitrator. In this climate, any side that rejects his proposal will pay a hefty political price, for it will appear to be defying the UN.
