EU places deficit higher 2004 budget blowout gets bigger; Eurostat continues assessing Greek books

The European Commission yesterday revised upward its estimate for Greece's 2004 budget deficit to well over 6 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), even while the country's accounting woes look set to continue as the Commission added that it has not finished going over the government's books.

Anti-corruption front sees cracks
The comments made by Deputy Economy and Finance Minister Adam Regouzas at a conference organized by the federation of Greece's customs officials on June 24, and which were belatedly released to the media yesterday, came as a shock to public opinion. «In a bid to upgrade the image and the actual work of the custom services - and I am saying this as a friend - I am calling on you to put less emphasis on extra remuneration [to speed up work],» Regouzas told the conference.

The ball and DNA
It's reasonable that enthusiasm pushes us toward exaggeration. But those who choose to attribute the basketball win to Greek DNA, God's blessing, the protection of the Holy Virgin or the untamable Greek spirit should rein themselves in a bit with the thought of the following simple fact: Into what lethargy had Greek DNA fallen for the 18 years between the 1987 golden prize and yesterday, and why?
