Premier’s speech has set the bar
During his address to New Democracy's central committee yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis drew clear restrictions and outlined clear objectives. He set limits on those who like to portray his administration as one that is falling apart at the seams. He also laid out clear objectives for specific areas, such as privatizing Olympic Airlines, abolishing closed-shop professions, curbing the waste of public funds etc. His speech rallied the party and gave rise to some expectations of a reshuffle in the near future.
COMMENTARY
Karamanlis’s rallying cry
Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis's speech to his party's central committee yesterday was like a rallying cry to a disheartened army whose generals were squabbling in the middle of the desert. Karamanlis took matters into his own hands: He tried to give his troops a shot in the arm, to get his officers to assume their responsibilities and let the enemy know he is not about to surrender. He drew a line in the dust and proclaimed: «There is no dilemma. I say 'No' to the chipping away of this government. 'No' to its undermining. To those who have other plans, face me head on: Topple this government!» It was a powerful performance - classic Karamanlis, confidently stating he would brook no opposition.

Waste not, want not
Greece consumes more than it is able to produce. It is also relatively poor in the natural resources necessary for manufacturing and fuel production. This means that it has to import a lot more than it can export, which leads to an endless cycle of borrowing to finance the imports and, consequently, ever-widening deficits that undermine the country's future development. A natural solution would be to pursue better waste management.
