A time to reflect on the future
The holiday season is a good time to take a moment to reflect upon the issues that concern us and rearrange our thoughts, especially as this year, 2008, is leaving us with deep scars of a financial, social and political nature.
All of our political leaders, and not just those who are in power, should also seize this opportunity to consider their responsibilities and muster the strength and courage required under the present circumstances to make a bid for change and to launch new initiatives.
Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis in particular finds himself at a critical point, at a crossroad, as the Cabinet reshuffle that has been lined up for the new year is expected to play a serious role in determining what course the country takes in the future. |

2008: The end of illusions
Even before the year started, it was evident that 2008 would be difficult, mainly because of the storm clouds gathering on the horizon as the housing market crashed in the United States. At the time, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and his minister for the economy, Giorgos Alogoskoufis, were adamant that the Greek economy was «armor-plated.» The fortifications, if they did exist, were useless: The crisis was here even before the storm crossed the Atlantic. |
