Next steps for Cyprus sought Papadopoulos and Karamanlis discuss strategy as EU prepares to open office north of Green Line

President Tassos Papadopoulos of Cyprus arrived in Athens yesterday for talks with the Greek government on a common strategy to deal with the Cyprus issue after Greek Cypriots voted overwhelmingly last Saturday against a UN proposal for their island's reunification.

Solid front
The «no» vote of the Greek Cypriots to the UN plan for reunification did not engender the catastrophic consequences that some feared, but it certainly had its diplomatic side effects. Greek Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis and his Greek-Cypriot counterpart George Iacovou waged a joint battle at the General Affairs Council in Luxembourg on Monday, and they will continue to do so to stave off unwanted developments.
COMMENTARY
People under pressure
Most foreign commentators agree that international pressure on Greek Cypriots to endorse the UN reunification plan in fact backfired. That was only to be expected. No one has the right to impose their will on the people. Paradoxically, while freedom of expression is an established right in Western democracies and despite the dismal experience of the former Eastern bloc, defense of this basic principle has come to be seen as the province of the Left. In any case, reaching a universal consensus on the meaning of democracy, popular sovereignty, national independence and human rights has always been a central goal.
