Alarm bells that must be heard
Recent developments in the district of Aghios Panteleimonas, not far from the center of Athens, were a strong foretaste of what might follow as a result of the burgeoning challenge of illegal immigration. A demonstration by local residents on Wednesday to protest the large increase in the local immigrant population was hijacked by far-right protesters and anarchists, who ended up clashing with each other for several hours.

A grim forecast
The annual presentation of the state budget reminds us of the old saying about second marriages being the triumph of hope over experience. In life, a second chance might be all one needs to get it right, but in drawing up budgets, our governments have managed to get things wrong time after time. They have never managed to meet their own forecasts. (Which raises the question of why they bother - is it the triumph of ritual over substance, perhaps?)
