Athens, Nicosia back UN plan Leaders agree on common strategy, stressing that rejected blueprint remains basis for solution

President Tassos Papadopoulos and Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis met in Athens yesterday to discuss the next steps in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem and stressed that they supported UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's blueprint for the island's reunification.

Dismal finale
Instead of a spectacular climax - a dismal finale. This is, unfortunately, the trajectory of the much-hyped Cultural Olympiad. Instead of a grandiose culmination, as pompously announced in the past, the Cultural Olympiad is dogged by a burgeoning wave of cancellations. The runup to the Olympics' Opening Ceremony has left much to be desired.
COMMENTARY
‘Ungrateful’ Cypriots
Bypassing the fact that the Annan plan would not have guaranteed a workable and viable united Republic of Cyprus but an insecure client state, fierce supporters of the UN blueprint in Athens continue to assail the 76 percent of Greek Cypriots who voted against the plan. Their attacks come thick and fast: «What do Greek Cypriots eventually want? If they don't want a settlement they should say so. The 'no' vote will get us into trouble. What else do they expect from Greece?
