Man dies as fans clash Panathinaikos and Olympiakos supporters battle; 7 injured, 18 detained

One person was killed and another seven injured yesterday when fans of rival teams fought for about half an hour before a women's volleyball match east of Athens in what appears to have been a prearranged meeting between hooligans.

When impunity spawns violence
Did we have to mourn a dead fan before we finally decided to do something about lawbreaking in this country? Did a 25-year-old man have to lose his life in a violent clash between rival supporters before Greece's political parties and the responsible state authorities decided to mobilize against violence both in and outside sport grounds?

On its 50th anniversary, the EU can claim quite a positive record. But anyone can see that the integration process has come to a halt. The two expansion waves have taken a hefty toll on political unification. It's not just the practical difficulty of finding a single voice for 27 governments.
