OTE agreement under fire As opposition leader criticizes landmark deal, Brussels objections feared

A landmark agreement, ending the civil servant status of future OTE Telecom employees while offering current workers juicy incentives for early retirement, came under heavy attack by the main opposition party yesterday, as fears grew that the deal could fall foul of European Union competition rules.

Quo vadis Europe?
The French referendum on the European Constitution yesterday and the upcoming vote in the Netherlands may seem like distant developments to most people in our country. But they should not. Greece is part of Europe. It has a say in European developments, and it is directly affected by major European events. The French referendum on the EU charter is one such event. Yes, the rejection of the treaty would send shock waves through the entire bloc.
COMMENTARY
Not in our interest
Those who believe that the audit of public finances conducted by National Economy Minister Giorgos Alogoskoufis exposed the true proportions of the country's economic gloom are deluding themselves. Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas's painstaking analysis of Greece's competitiveness deficit also failed to fully disclose the economy's shortcomings in that sector. So far, the government has refrained from revealing the actual efforts made to tackle the problems threatening to derail our economy.
