Cyprus proposes trade measures |

| The Cypriot government yesterday announced that it will allow Turkish-Cypriot vehicles to cross from the Turkish-occupied north of the island and will exempt Turkish Cypriots from paying VAT on goods sold directly to consumers in the Cyprus Republic. The decision is part of a series of proposals made to the European Commission on unilateral moves to boost economic relations between the two sides.

Archbishop Christodoulos, head of the Church of Greece and a known raconteur and teller of jokes, is embroiled in a very public battle with Lakis Lazopoulos, perhaps Greece's best-known current satirist.

Opportunities
We are in the final stretch before the Games' opening ceremony and it is already clear that the Olympics experience has introduced new practices that will continue to influence daily life after the Games are over. No doubt the outcome of this unprecedented effort will depend in part on the smooth operation of the national power grid and the telecommunications network, as well as on the complex arrangements designed to welcome the foreign delegations and teams to Greece. |

COMMENTARY |

Looking outward
We have finally muddled through, huffing and puffing and at great cost, and have now emerged from the tunnel ready to undertake the great responsibility of hosting the Olympics.
Some unresolved issues remain, as there is little time left to test the coordination of the numerous events to be staged simultaneously during the Games, meaning that we will have to do with some uncertainty and risk of incidents. |

A dream
...Wasn't that the «pre-Olympic dream» of the Athenians? To create a city with state-of-the-art high-speed ring roads and modern and efficient means of public transport which remain faithful to their timetables, thus attracting most Athenian commuters? To ensure that major roads are free of parked cars, that traffic flows smoothly, that junctions do not get clogged up? That there is less pollution, noise and angst?
Just a few days before the launch of the Olympic Games, the image of the capital appears to have been transformed by the massive junctions and four-lane highways... |
