PM stands by citizenship for immigrants
Papandreou envisions multiethnic Greeks

Prime Minister George Papandreou yesterday put up an impassioned defense of his government's bid to grant second-generation immigrants citizenship, presenting a vision of a country inhabited by Greeks of all ethnic backgrounds and rejecting criticism by saying that Greece's cultural stability is threatened more by the quality of its television than by migrants.

One week has passed since George Papandreou, the Socialist prime minister, announced the government's intention to introduce an increase in fuel tax, as part of its plans to up revenue and trim the burgeoning deficit.

Not long ago, Greece stood head and shoulders above all its neighbors. It was the only member of both the European Union and NATO and its economy had developed way ahead of those in the region - with the exception of Turkey's - which took off under the free market reforms of the mid-1980s.
