Two men, aged 29 and 41, were arrested and charged yesterday in connection with the attack on Christos Polyzogopoulos, the head of Greece’s largest umbrella union, GSEE. The unnamed men were charged with attempted murder, robbery and causing damage. Polyzogopoulos was badly beaten on Tuesday night by a mob of suspected anarchists. He was released from a hospital yesterday and vowed to return to work.

The appeal of convicted members of the November 17 terrorist group adjourned yesterday and will continue on Monday, when judges will rule on whether the terrorists’ statements to police are inadmissible. Some of the group members have claimed their statements were made under duress and so should not be considered.

A 58-year-old crew member of a Turkish-flagged freight vessel was airlifted to a hospital on Rhodes yesterday after suffering a stroke, authorities said. A Super Puma helicopter flew out to the MV Villa vessel after it sent out a call for help while off Karpathos.

A 52-year-old man accused of physically abusing the 2-year-old son of a woman with whom the man shared a home was yesterday remanded in custody. The boy, who had a fractured arm and leg and bleach burns on his body, was released from a hospital yesterday.

The Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) said yesterday that Creta Farm’s organically raised turkey will be taken off shelves after preservative levels in the product where found to be too high. EFET said that the batch has a February 26, 2006, expiry date.
