Three suspects implicated in the deadly beating of Australian tourist Doujon Zammit on Myconos could face fresh charges just days after being released on bail. The nightclub employees have been charged with complicity in the attack on the 20-year-old from Sydney but were released from custody last weekend, much to the disgust of the victim’s father. However, legal sources have told Kathimerini that the three could now face additional charges, following Zammit’s death on Friday. A 25-year-old nightclub bouncer has been charged with killing the tourist.

Three people were killed and another three injured in a crash on the national road between Ardanios and Orestiada in northeastern Greece yesterday. The three people killed were all Bulgarian nationals. The injured were Greek women aged 17, 42 and 44. They were taken to hospital in Alexandroupolis with serious injuries. Police said that the car carrying the Bulgarians had swerved into oncoming traffic.

The Nautical Club of Vouliagmeni in southern Athens suffered serious damage in a fire early yesterday. The blaze broke out at about 4 a.m. and was doused some two hours later but the bar and a number of yachts were damaged during that time. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire. Nobody was injured in the incident.

The ban on cars circulating in the center of Athens depending on whether their license plate ends in an odd or even number will be back in force on Monday, September 1, the Public Works and Environment Ministry said yesterday. As usual, the restrictions will be in place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday.

Coast guard officers helped rescue 34 migrants from the sea off the small Dodecanese island of Agathonisi after their wooden boat was smashed by waves. Seven of the migrants were airlifted to safety while the remaining immigrants were pulled out of the sea by a coast guard patrol boat. The migrants had been trying to reach Greece from Turkey. Another 72 illegal immigrants were detained yesterday on the island of Psara, near Chios.

A bear has been found shot dead in the woods in Prespes, western Macedonia, according to the wildlife protection group Arcturos. The animal, aged between 4 and 5 years, had been shot nine times from a distance of about 50 meters not far from the village of Vrontero. Arcturos said that it was the second bear to be found shot dead in the last month.

Four adults and two children were rescued by helicopter from a yacht off Kos yesterday after the vessel developed an engine problem. Gale-force winds were blowing in the area at the time.
