A 22-year-old man was arrested in Halkidiki, northern Greece, on Saturday on suspicion of being the driver in a hit-and-run accident that led to the death of a British soldier. Brett Walmsley, 25, from Darwen near Blackburn, was killed early on Friday while walking along the country road between Nea Moudania and Paliouri on the Cassandra peninsula. Walmsley was staying at a hotel in the resort of Kallithea. He had been serving with NATO forces in Kosovo (KFOR). Police did not name the 22-year-old suspect but said that he works in a local supermarket.

Assailants smashed the windows of a branch of the National Bank in Neo Psychico, northern Athens, on Friday night and set the building on fire, police said. The bank is housed on the ground floor of a three-story apartment block but the fire service was able to put out the blaze before it spread to the rest of the building. The attack occurred just before midnight and police said they found two containers with a flammable liquid at the scene.

Employees from the waste collection and cleaning department of the Piraeus Municipality blocked the entrance to Piraeus's refuse center yesterday in a row over overtime and vacations. The employees refused to allow garbage trucks in or out of the center.

A 32-year-old man was arrested on the outskirts of Thessaloniki on Saturday on suspicion of smuggling five Iraqis into Greece, police said. The suspect, an Armenian national, was allegedly caught as he was letting the three men and two women into his car. Police said that they found 1,518 euros, a small amount of cocaine, an ax and two stiletto knives in his possession. It was not clear if the suspect had crossed into Greece with the migrants or was picking them up at a prearranged point.

One Pakistani man was killed and another two injured during a fight in Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, police said on Saturday. The dead man, who was not named, had been stabbed and the other two men suffered knife injuries. Police said it was not immediately clear what caused the fight.
