TEENAGER’S MURDER

Police arrest suspected killer

Officers yesterday arrested 44-year-old Dimitris Mazarakos, who had spent four days on the run since allegedly shooting dead Christos Roumeliotis, 17, in the village of Xirokambos near Arta after the boy’s 16-year-old sister apparently rejected the suspect’s advances. Officers picked up Mazarakos just before 11 a.m. yesterday, acting on a tip from a villager in the area of Peta.

Toilet gang

Two gunmen held up a wine shop in the Athens suburb of Petralona late Saturday night, slightly injuring the owner and making off with some 6,200 euros, police said yesterday. The robbers locked the store owner and his assistant in a bathroom while they went through the cash register. It is thought to be the latest in a series of incidents involving a gang that follows this tactic when robbing a number of Athenian shops.

Traffic restrictions

The construction of a footbridge, connecting Aegaleo with Rendi, on Petrou Ralli Street, will mean that, for the next month, no cars will be able to stop or park along the section of the road between Thivon and Kifissos avenues. The speed limit will also be reduced to 40 kilometers per hour and no vehicle over 4.5 meters high will be allowed along the road over the same period.

Serial robber

A man has been arrested on suspicion of holding up five banks in recent months with a fake gun and making off with some 99,000 euros in total, Thessaloniki police said on Saturday.

Taxi attack

One of two men wanted in connection with Friday’s shooting and robbery of a taxi driver in the Athens suburb of Ano Liosia has been arrested, police said on Saturday. The cabbie was injured in the attack. The unnamed 23-year-old suspect was found near Thebes on Friday afternoon, several hours after the incident, with a sawn-off shotgun and 400 euros in his possession.
