WW II Battle of Crete remembered

President Karolos Papoulias was among the guests who attended a re-enactment by the Greek Army and Air Force of the Nazi invasion of Crete in 1941. Some 20,000 people were killed during the battle, including many British and Australian soldiers, after a huge airborne invasion by German forces.

Cup final

Fans of Olympiakos and Aris soccer teams clash before the cup final in Patras on Saturday, forcing police to use tear gas to disperse them. Three people were arrested outside the Panpeloponnisiako Stadium as Olympiakos supporters tried to stop Aris fans from entering the neutral ground. Fans threw plastic chairs at each other inside the stadium though no major injuries were reported. Olympiakos won the game 3-0.

ND lead

The ruling New Democracy party has a 3.6 percent lead over main opposition PASOK, according to a poll conducted by RASS, which was published yesterday. Of some 1,600 people questioned, 32.9 percent expressed support for the conservatives.

Immigrants rescued

Some 36 illegal immigrants were towed to safety on Saturday after coast guards located the small wooden boat which was carrying them southeast of Lesvos. The boat’s engine broke down as they were sailing into Greek waters from Turkey.
