INTRUDER SHOT Farmer, 90, arrested after shooting suspected robber in Cretan home
A 90-year-old farmer was arrested in the village of Kalamitsi, near Hania in Crete, yesterday after shooting a 25-year-old man who allegedly broke into his home to rob him, police said. The younger man, a Moldovan national, had worked for the farmer for the past two years. He was hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries from being shot in the stomach. Police said the younger man broke into the farmer’s home while the elderly man was asleep. The farmer will remain in custody while authorities investigate the shooting. DEADLY STOVE Fume inhalation kills man A man died and his wife was hospitalized yesterday after inhaling fumes from a heating stove in their home in Elefsina, west of Athens, police said. The unnamed man, an Albanian national, died at about 3 a.m. when the fumes filled his home while he was asleep. Police said the couple had left the stove on overnight to keep their home warm. Authorities said they were alerted by neighbors, who sensed something was wrong. The couple were taken to the Geniko Kratiko Hospital in Nikaia where the man was pronounced dead and the woman was given urgent medical attention. Her condition was not known last night. Doctors did not make public the exact cause of the man’s death. Businessman robbed A 48-year-old nightclub owner was robbed early yesterday in Ano Patissia, near central Athens, by two unknown men who made away with 108,000 euros in cash, police said. The victim, Athanassios Psalidas, was about to enter his apartment building at about 8.30 a.m. when he was stopped by the two armed assailants. Psalidas was then struck over the head with the butt of a handgun by one of the two men when he refused to hand over the 10 paper bags he was holding which contained the money. Police said that the assailants then escaped with the money on motorbike. Two killed Two people were killed on Monday when the car they were traveling in crashed and caught fire on the capital-bound Athens-Corinth national highway on Monday. Their vehicle collided with another car shortly before the Elefsina toll station but the driver and three passengers of the second vehicle escaped unharmed. Firefighters pulled out the burned bodies of the two victims, whom police have not yet identified. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Armed robbery A 56-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint by three armed men at his home in Keratea, east of Athens, on Sunday. Police said that the robbers approached the man outside his house in the early hours of the morning and forced him to return inside his home, where they stole money, mobile phones, credit cards and a hunting rifle before leaving. Immolation averted A 36-year-old kiosk owner narrowly escaped being burned in Kolonos, near central Athens, on Sunday after a robber doused him in a flammable liquid and threatened to set him on fire, police said. The robber demanded that the victim hand over his money but the kiosk owner grabbed for the assailant, prompting the suspect to run off, police said. Peristeri shootout Three Albanian men were injured yesterday after being shot at in Peristeri, western Athens, by a group of unknown men, also believed to be Albanian nationals. The three victims were taken to hospital after suffering gunshot wounds to their legs. The attack took place shortly before 1 a.m. in what police believe has been an ongoing clash between the two groups. Police did not identify the victims. Toy banned The Development Ministry said yesterday that it had banned the sale of a Chinese-made electronic game because of a risk that it may catch fire. The ministry said that the game is imported by Jumbo and is called Shen Kong 520. It is manufactured by Shengang Electronic. The ministry said that it was banning the game after being informed by the fire service in Crete that the device was allegedly the cause of a blaze on the island.
