Stormy weather prompts cancellation of festival’s 2nd day

The organizers of the popular Rockwave music festival, held in a field in Malakassa, north of Athens, canceled yesterday’s show after bad weather caused damage to stages and equipment.The second day of the festival, yesterday’s lineup had included big names such as Welsh pop-soul singer Duffy, trip-hop artist Tricky and American alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr. Organizers are due to announce whether today’s scheduled show, due to feature veteran rock act Motley Crue and others, will go ahead or not. Ticketholders should check the websites www.rockwavefestival.gr and www.didimusic.gr for updates.

SANTORINI QUAKE

5.1-level tremor ‘not a worry’

Seismologists reassured citizens over the weekend that a strong earthquake, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, that shook the popular Aegean island of Santorini shortly before midnight on Friday was no cause for concern. The tremor was followed by several aftershocks, the strongest of which measured 4.7 Richter and was recorded early on Saturday afternoon.

Bank disruptions

A 24-hour strike by bank workers today will disrupt transactions at several banks, including National and Emporiki. Branches of foreign banks operating in Greece are not expected to be affected by the action.

Armed raids

Three armed robbers raided a gas station in the Athens suburb of Aghios Stefanos late on Saturday night, shooting the migrant worker who had been on duty in the foot before fleeing with an undetermined sum. The migrant was transfered to hospital with minor injuries. Later on Saturday, in Thessaloniki, a lone armed robber held up a branch of a supermarket chain in the district of Nikopolis, netting 700 euros from the cashiers. The gunman fled on a motorcycle being driven by an accomplice who had waited for him outside the store, witnesses said. There were no injuries reported.

Swine flu

Another seven people were diagnosed with swine flu yesterday, raising the total number of cases recorded in Greece to 86. The latest cases include five people who visited Greece from the United Kingdom and two who are believed to have come into contact with diagnosed sufferers. Of the 86 people who have been diagnosed with the potentially deadly disease, 30 have reportedly made a full recovery. The remaining sufferers are undergoing treatment.

Hail damage

A heavy hail storm over parts of Thessaloniki prefecture late on Friday resulted in widespread power cuts on Saturday. Public Power Corporation teams had managed to restore electricity supplies in most areas within a few hours. The local fire service received dozens of calls from flooded ground-floor stores and homes.

Drunken brawl

Two men were injured, one seriously, following a drunken brawl in the Athens suburb of Aghioi Anargyroi, early yesterday. One of the two, believed to have been stabbed in the throat with a broken bottle, was said to be in serious condition. The other was given first aid for cuts and bruises.
