May Day disruption

Workers’ action to affect public transport, city center

The Athens-Piraeus urban electric railway (ISAP) will not be operating tomorrow as workers go on strike to join May Day protests. Buses and trolley buses will not run between 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 10 p.m. to the end of the shift. Metro services will also be suspended between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 11 p.m. and the end of the shift. Two rallies are planned for Athens, both starting at 10.30 a.m., one at Klafthmonos Square and the other at Syntagma Square. A protest is also planned for Thessaloniki.

Fire measures

Landfills to be overseen

Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos said state services are well-prepared for this summer’s fire season, which begins tomorrow, noting that previous catastrophic fires have served as a lesson. Fire engines will be put on standby outside certain landfills, often the source of forest fires, a ministry official said.

Bus accident

An elderly man was treated in the hospital yesterday after falling out of a moving bus en route to Aghios Antonios in western Athens from Petroupoli when one of the vehicle’s doors opened. The man suffered injuries to his arm and nose. The exact circumstances of the incident were unclear.

Switched on

Homeowners who have paid to be included in the Public Power Corporations’ reduced nighttime tariff were reminded yesterday that the summer timetable comes into operation on May 1. Until October 31, eligible customers will pay less for any electricity that they use between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Mother-to-be dies

An autopsy is expected to cast some light on the death of a woman in her eighth month of pregnancy at a hospital on Crete on Tuesday. The 33-year-old woman was admitted to an Iraklion hospital on Monday night after complaining of stomach and chest pains. Doctors carried out tests after establishing that the pain was not linked to her pregnancy and put her under observation. She died the following morning, as did her baby.

Chased down

Two people found with 350 kilos of hashish were arrested near Ioannina in northwestern Greece early yesterday following a chase by police during which an officer was slightly injured. Three cars failed to stop at a roadblock, prompting police to give chase. Another two suspects escaped on foot.

Mild quake

An undersea quake measuring 4 on the Richter scale occurred northeast of Alonissos, an island in the Sporades, shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday. There was no damage or injuries.
